The history of Methodism in Eureka Springs covers the same span of time as the history of the town itself. The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was organized in November 1879, by Methodist among the thousands of health-seekers coming to the new resort rapidly growing around the natural springs, which were acclaimed far and wide as "healing fountains". The first meeting place was a small house on Eureka street, then the church moved to an upper room of a building in the heart of Spring Street's busy commercial district. In 1887 the congregation built a new house of worship on Pine Street. In 1901, the Board of Stewards successfully undertook a difficult project, moving the church building to a more accessible site on Spring Street. The church has been known as First Methodist since the 1940's, uniting conferences of Northern and Southern bodies of Methodism. Further unification in 1968 changed the name to the FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. In August of 2000, the church vacated this building to prepare for and build a new church located on Highway 23 South. On April 15, 2001, exactly 100 years later, we held our first worship service in our new church. |
